New National Assessments on Gender and STI for East Africa released

April 04, 2016

Studies on factors affecting women’s participation in STI are completed for four East African countries: Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda.

Since 2012, OWSD in cooperation with Women in Global Science and Technology (WISAT) has supported the collection and analysis of data on the status of women in science, technology and innovation (STI) at the national level, through the National Assessments on Gender and Science, Technology and Innovation. These assessments use a specially-developed Gender Equality – Knowledge Society (GE&KS) framework to gather and evaluate data across a wide range of indicators, to present a full-spectrum picture of the conditions that affect women’s participation in STI ranging from educational opportunities to economic standing to employment in STI fields.

During the 2012 pilot assessment, National Assessments were undertaken for six countries and one region, with funding from the Elsevier Foundation: Brazil, India, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, South Africa, the United States, and the European Union. Key findings from these first round of studies as well as the full reports can be found in the OWSD Resources: http://www.owsd.net/resources/data-collection-and-analysis.

In 2015, four more National Assessments in East Africa were initiated with funds from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). These studies, in Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda, will enable policymakers to identify specific barriers to women’s participation in STI at the national level, as well as allow for comparison within the East Africa region and with other nations.

An analytical report on the findings of the East African assessments will be published in spring 2016. In meantime, the full reports from the Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda assessments can be downloaded below, or from the Resources page.
