The overlap of the traditional disciplines Microbiology and Geochemistry, introducing a new emerging field of Biogeochemistry had captivated my interest. The broad realm of Biogeochemistry includes the understanding of biological processes affecting the environmental chemistry, which in turn controlling the biological phylotype distributions, affecting the biological processes. My research is based on the emerging geochemical problems in understanding of the role of biogeochemical interactions in aquatic (groundwater, river water, lake water, deep water) and sedimentary environments, and their impacts on the cycling of organic and inorganic components. The research efforts are based on a multi-faceted approach, which includes intensive fieldwork followed by identifying the diverse microbial phylogenetic groups and their role in elemental biogeochemical cycling, including analyses of microbial metagenomics and culture dependent studies, biomarkers, trace metals, stable isotopes, and rigorous data interpretation.
